Hope When it Hurts

30 Biblical Reflections To Help You Grasp God’s Purpose in Your Suffering

(The Good Book Company 2017)

Winner of the 2018 Woman Alive Readers Choice Award

SUFFERING IS REAL. BUT SO IS HOPE.

Life hurts. We’re no strangers to this fact. It’s why we wrote this book. And not simply because life hurts, but because there’s hope even when it does.

Kristen and I have walked through, and are walking in, difficult times. So these thirty biblical reflections are full of realism about the hurts of life—yet overwhelmingly full of hope about the God who gives life.

We wrote this book for you, to point you to hope, because there’s more to our suffering than meets the eye. This book is about the God who offers hope, even joy, in suffering. It’s a journey through 2 Corinthians 4 and 5, where we see that God wants to give us hope not just beyond our hurts but in our hurts; that he wants us to see how he is able to work in and through suffering and ultimately give us himself.

With a foreword by Nancy Guthrie, Hope When It Hurts contains a biblical reflection for each chapter, along with questions, prayers, and a space for journaling.

We pray this book greatly helps you, as you cling to the God of all hope.

Together Through the Storms

Biblical Encouragements for Your Marriage When Life Hurts

(The Good Book Company 2020)

Together Through the Storms helps married couples to navigate the storms of life together. Working through the book of Job, Sarah Walton (author of “Hope when it Hurts”) and her husband Jeff reflect on their own experiences in a marriage that has faced chronic illness, baggage from the past, a child with neurological challenges, disability, and financial difficulties—and show how to cling to Christ and each other.

This is not a “how to” guide on having the best marriage, but, rather, a walk alongside you and your spouse, sharing the realities of suffering and the effects it can have on a marriage. It is an encouragement to lift your eyes above your trials, off your spouse, and onto our all-sufficient Savior.

Tears and Tossings

Hope in the Waves of Life (10publishing 2022)

Tears and Tossings: Hope in the Waves of Life

No matter how we try to sugarcoat it, there’s something about suffering and loss that shakes our confidence, disorients us, dulls the things we once enjoyed, and brings questions that demand an answer.

Tears and Tossings is a book for those days of chaos and nights of storms. Reflecting on her experiences of pain and hope, Sarah Walton encourages us to come to a God who loves us, knows us, and not only sees our tossings and tears, but holds them as his own.

Sample of Endorsements

“I must admit that reading the first chapter already brought me to tears. From one sufferer to another, Sarah Walton isn’t just well acquainted with suffering, she also knows the hope we have in God in the midst of suffering. I appreciate her raw honesty regarding her pain, but the even greater truth that God is good and gracious and not only knows our tears but holds them in his hands. What a beautiful thought! I recommend this book for anyone hurting or knows someone who is hurting. I particularly recommend handing this short book out to someone in pain who might be searching for truth in the darkness.”
— Dave Furman, Senior Pastor, Redeemer Church of Dubai; author, Being There and Kiss the Wave

“The pathway that leads through life is inevitably stained by tears—sometimes tears of loneliness or grief, sometimes tears of pain or fear, sometimes all of them mixed together in one sad torrent. What a blessing it is to know that our tears are as precious as pearls to God, that he knows them all, sanctifies them all, and promises to dry each one with his gentle hand. May Tears and Tossings give you the greatest hope even in your deepest sorrows.”
— Tim Challies, author, Seasons of Sorrow

He Gives More Grace: 30 Hope-Filled Reflections for the Ups and Downs of Motherhood

(Daily devotions for moms/ mums with children of all ages)

Devotional giving help and encouragement for Christian moms.

Motherhood is one of life’s most joyful yet most difficult gifts. We are eager to get it “right,” yet parenting usually highlights our weaknesses and leaves us worried about our mistakes.

These hope-filled, positive devotions recognize the realities and pressures, joys and disappointments of motherhood and will give you a precious reminder of grace from God’s word to hold onto each day. They will help you to trust that God’s grace is enough for you and your kids. As the authors say in the introduction, “Our children do not need a perfect mother. What they do need is a mother who recognizes her need for a perfect Savior and understands that this is the greatest need of her children as well.”

As you focus on the work of Jesus rather than your own efforts, you will feel less pressure and more freedom and joy in all the ups and downs of motherhood.

Written by a mother-daughter combination (one with four kids aged 10-16, one with three grown kids and ten grandchildren) who are both grateful recipients of God’s grace and faithfulness in the many seasons, situations, and realities of motherhood.

The Long Road Home

A Tale of Two Sons and the Never-Ending Love of a Father

An Engaging Rendition of the Prodigal Son Parable for Kids

In this creative retelling of the parable of the Prodigal Son, the youngest son, Wander, was willing to give up everything for his independence―including a relationship with his father and brother Goodness. With his father’s cash in hand, he left for the alluring towns of Perfection, Prosperity, and Popularity. Each new town brought a brief sense of happiness, but eventually, as the excitement wore off, he was overcome by a deepening sense of emptiness. It was then that Wander remembered his father’s words, “Wherever you go, my son, I want you to remember that I love you with a never-ending love.”

The Long Road Home retells this powerful parable in a creative and understandable way for children ages 6–8. As kids hear about Wander’s difficult experiences and discuss them with their parents, they will learn joy is not found within themselves or in the world. Instead, children will rediscover the never-ending love of their heavenly Father, who gives them worth, hope, and identity when they put their trust in him.

  • For Children Ages 6–8: Engaging story keeps kids focused on biblical truths
  • A Retelling of the Prodigal Son: A classic parable told in a fresh and creative way
  • Influenced by The Pilgrim’s Progress: Comparable storyline and tone to the famous novel The Pilgrim’s Progress
  • Teaches Kids an Important Lesson: With the guidance of parents, young readers will understand their true identity, worth, and joy is found through their heavenly Father
