Hi Friends,
I’m excited to share about The Long Road Home with you this Christmas season. After quickly running out of stock when it launched this past month (through Crossway), we’re finally back in business with enough stock to last the season, so I waited until now to share a bit more of what this book is about. AND in celebration, I thought I’d do a fun Christmas giveaway below!
But first – let me share a bit about it…
In a nutshell, The Long Road Home is essentially The Prodigal Son account written in an allegorical way similar to “The Pilgrim’s Progress”.
The book follows the story of Wander (the younger brother), Goodness (the older brother), and their father, as Wander travels into a distant country in search of the ultimate source of happiness, satisfaction, and purpose. In essence, it leads us to consider – in what ways are our hearts prone to wander in search of happiness, purpose, value, etc as we leave the protection and love of our Heavenly Father, in pursuit of something better?
Which is why Wander finds himself traveling through the Cities of Perfection, Prosperity, and Popularity…common places we tend to search for our identity.
That is, until Wander experiences the emptiness that each city brings and finally finds himself where we often do as well…the Town of Desperation, where we’re often faced with the painful consequences of our choices, the shame that comes as a result, and the longing to be truly seen, known, and loved.

But it’s there, in the dark of night with no earthly hope to be found, that Wander remembers his father’s words, “Remember, my son, that I love you with a never-ending love”. And without hesitation, Wander took off as fast he could through each city he had traveled – in hopes that his father would show him mercy.
And when he reached his father’s land, he suddenly saw a figure running toward him in the distance…

But don’t worry, I won’t give the rest away! You’ll have to read it to see the end of the story. ; )
Friends, in the end, I hope and pray that this well-known story being told in a fresh way will help our children (and us) see themselves somewhere within Wander’s journey, or the struggles of his older brother, Goodness. But more than anything, I hope and pray that each person who reads The Long Road Home will be moved by the beautiful reminder of the never-ending love of their Heavenly Father. No one is too far gone from the love and forgiveness offered through Jesus.
I hope you’ll grab a copy for your kids, grandkids, other children in your life, or children’s ministry this Christmas! It can be found at every major retailer, including Amazon, Crossway, Focus on the Family, Target, Barnes and Noble, and more! Most sites are also running sales right now.

My four grandchildren, ten years old and younger, would likely enjoy “The Long Road Home.” They love Bible stories and are probably familiar with the parable about the Prodigal Son. I am emailing your blog post to my daughter and daughter-in-law. In the meantime, I’ll check to see if our local Target stocks your book. Thank you, Sarah. 🙂

This looks like a helpful book in further exploring in a kid friendly way what is going on in the hearts of the characters of a familiar story— which helps reveal what is going on in our own hearts.
I would read the story with my kids.
I emailed the article to a friend.
